What the regulations ask of plant records

Checked against the source

Inspection

Work equipment whose safety depends on its installation, or that deteriorates in use, is inspected at suitable intervals and after exceptional circumstances. The result is recorded and kept until the next inspection is recorded.

PUWER 1998, regulation 6

Moving equipment

Equipment does not leave the firm, or arrive from another, without physical evidence of its last inspection or thorough examination.

PUWER 1998 regulation 6(4); LOLER 1998 regulation 9(4)

Thorough examination

Lifting equipment for people and lifting accessories are thoroughly examined at least every six months, and other lifting equipment at least every twelve months, or to an examination scheme. The reports are kept as regulation 11 sets out.

LOLER 1998, regulations 9 and 11

How to use it

Hired plant goes on too

A hired telehandler on site is the firm’s to check. Record the hire company and ask for the thorough examination report on delivery.

Take it out of use the same day

A defect that makes an item unsafe changes its status on the register at once, not at the next update.

Let the dates come to you

In Unibuild each item has a QR code, its inspections and LOLER examinations are held against it, and the office sees what is due before it lapses. See assets and inventory.

What is a plant register?
A list of every item of plant and equipment a firm owns or hires, with its serial number, where it is, and its inspection and thorough examination dates. It shows at a glance what is due and what is out of use.
How often does plant need inspecting under PUWER?
At suitable intervals set by the risk, and after anything that could affect its safety. PUWER does not fix one interval for all equipment; the manufacturer’s instructions and the conditions of use decide it.
How often is a LOLER thorough examination needed?
At least every six months for equipment that lifts people and for lifting accessories such as slings and chains. At least every twelve months for other lifting equipment, unless a competent person sets an examination scheme.
How long are inspection records kept?
PUWER inspection results are kept until the next inspection is recorded. LOLER thorough examination reports are generally kept until the next report, or for two years, whichever is later, with longer periods for some first examinations.
How does Unibuild handle the plant register?
Each item carries a QR code, with its owner or hire company, location, inspections and LOLER examination register held against it, and alerts before a date lapses. See assets and inventory.
