Once concrete is placed, the only account of what happened is what somebody wrote down at the rig. Depth, torque, penetration rate, concrete volume and over-break are the evidence the pile was built as designed.

A piling rig lifts casings, cages and augers, so it carries a thorough examination regime as well as maintenance. Ancillary lifting accessories, shackles, chains and lifting beams are examined in their own right and are the items most often missed.

A piling rig overturning is the accident this trade is judged by, and the control is a designed, constructed and certified working platform. The certificate is issued by the principal contractor and it is the document that decides who carries the risk.

Cages and concrete are ordered against a design

Reinforcement cages are fabricated to a schedule for specific piles, and concrete is ordered by the cubic metre against a theoretical volume that the ground then disagrees with. Both are consumed the moment they arrive.

Integrity testing asks what you already knew

Low strain integrity testing and load testing happen after the pile exists, and what they find is compared against the record made on the day. A pile with a good record and an odd trace is a conversation. A pile with no record is a problem.

Eight requirements, and an honest answer to each.

Materials booked where they are consumed

Assets and inventory holds stock against locations with an append only ledger, and booking a cage or a load of concrete to a pile posts the movement rather than leaving a second job for somebody to forget. That is what makes over-break visible in cost control.

Certificates that are found by the job

Documents and certificates holds the platform certificate, examination reports, cube results and test reports against the site and the pile, with an audit trail on the document itself, and issues 58 document types on your own letterhead.

Variations priced while the ground is open

Variations and day works are raised on site against the job, with photographs and a signature, at the moment the ground stops matching the design. The valuation then argues with a dated record rather than a recollection.

Users are unlimited on every plan. Operators, banksmen, engineers and directors all sit on the same price, so a second rig crew does not change the bill. Four things Unibuild does not do today.

Every one of these has been asked for by a piling firm on a demonstration. They are published here rather than discovered in week three.

  1. A feed from the rig data logger

    Pile records are entered on the phone at the rig, with photographs and attachments. There is no integration with rig instrumentation, so depths, torques and volumes are keyed or attached rather than read automatically from the machine.

  2. Pile design or capacity calculation

    The platform holds the design, the setting out drawing and the record of what was built. It does not calculate pile capacity, check a design or interpret an integrity trace. That stays with your engineer.

  3. Integrity and load test analysis

    Test reports are stored against the pile they belong to and retrieved by it. The testing itself, and the interpretation of the results, sits with the specialist who carried it out and this is not a substitute for their software.

  4. Concrete batching and cube scheduling

    Concrete deliveries and cube results are recorded against the pour, but there is no link to a batching plant and no automatic scheduling of cube tests at seven and twenty eight days. Those dates can be held as reminders, which is not the same thing.

The regimes you work under

Piling carries a heavier examination and temporary works load than almost any other groundworks discipline, because the equipment lifts, the platform it stands on is engineered, and the product is invisible within the hour. This is the reference version, kept factual.

What each regime asks of a piling contractor

LOLER 1998A piling rig lifts casings, cages and augers, so it is lifting equipment. Thorough examination is required at least every twelve months, or every six where people are lifted, and lifting accessories such as chains, shackles and beams are examined in their own right. The report is kept and produced on request.
PUWER 1998Work equipment must be suitable, maintained in good repair and inspected where safety depends on its condition. For a piling contractor that covers rigs, augers, hammers, pumps and welding sets, and the record has to identify the individual item rather than a quantity on a line.
BS 5975 and temporary worksWorking platforms, rig assembly and dismantling, and any temporary support are temporary works requiring design, a temporary works coordinator and a permit to proceed. The Federation of Piling Specialists working platform certificate is the document that records that a platform is fit for the rig standing on it.
CDM 2015A piling contractor is a contractor and sometimes a principal contractor, with duties around planning, the construction phase plan and cooperation. Where the work is notifiable the client makes the notification, but the arrangements for managing it are the contractor's to record.
ICE Specification for Piling and Embedded Retaining WallsThe industry specification sets what a pile record must contain, the tolerances that apply, and the testing regime. The record made at the rig is the document that demonstrates compliance with it, and it is written into the contract rather than being good practice.
Control of Noise at Work 2005 and vibrationDriven piling and percussive work put operatives over exposure action values routinely, and hand arm vibration from breakers and grinders carries its own limits. Exposure is assessed and controlled, with health surveillance where the limits require it.
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002Bentonite, polymers, admixtures, grouts and fuels all carry assessments and storage conditions, and silica dust from coring and breaking is one of the most heavily enforced exposures in construction.
RIDDOR 2013Specified injuries, over seven day injuries and dangerous occurrences are reportable. On this trade the overturning or collapse of lifting equipment is the category most often engaged, and it is assessed against the platform certificate and the examination records that were current on the day.

Only if what you ask of them is small. The realistic answer is to grant each operative three things on the phone, clock in, the pile record and RAMS acceptance, and leave everything else to the office. Permissions are granted per person, so that is a configuration rather than a compromise.
ConcreteCan it show over-break against theoretical volume?+
It can hold both figures against the pile and show the difference, and it can turn that into a priced variation while the wagon is still on site. What it will not do is calculate a theoretical volume for you from a design, which stays with your engineer.
PricingHow is it priced, and do you charge per operative?+
Users are unlimited and the price does not change when you take people on, which matters when a second rig means a second crew. There is no published rate card, because a twenty person firm running three modules and a hundred person firm running twenty are not the same product. Pricing is worked out on the demonstration.
SignalWhat happens when there is no signal on site?+
The field app is built for patchy coverage, which in a basement box or on a remote site is the normal condition rather than an edge case. Test it on your worst site rather than your best one, because that is the site that decides whether the data is trustworthy six months later.
RolloutDo we have to move everything across at once?+
No, and it is usually a poor idea. Most piling firms start with the plant and lifting register, because that is the one an audit tests first, and add pile records once the first is habit. Cataloguing every item you own before anyone uses the system is the most reliable way to kill the project.
