Any temporary support or structure must be designed, installed and maintained to withstand any foreseeable loads, and used only for the purposes it was designed for.

Open the register before the first item is designed, and keep it live as items go up and come down.

Each item gets its design check category in consultation with the designer, because the category decides who checks the design.
Load nothing without a permit
Record the permit to load before anything bears on the item, and the permit to dismantle before it is struck.

What is a temporary works register?
A live list of every temporary works item on a project, with its design check category, designer, checker, permits and status, kept by the temporary works coordinator.
Is a temporary works register a legal requirement?
No regulation prescribes one. CDM 2015 requires temporary structures to be designed and maintained for their loads, and HSE says there are no specific legal requirements about how temporary works are managed. BS 5975, the industry consensus, uses a register.
What are the BS 5975 design check categories?
Category 0 for standard solutions, checked by another member of the site or design team. Category 1 for simple designs, checked by another member of the design team. Category 2 for more complex designs, checked by someone not involved in the design. Category 3 for complex or innovative designs, checked by another organisation.
What is a permit to load?
Written confirmation that a temporary works item has been built as designed and may now carry load. A permit to dismantle does the same before it is struck.
Who keeps the temporary works register?
The temporary works coordinator. On larger sites, temporary works supervisors help with the day-to-day checks.
