The duty behind it

Checked against the source

Stress is a risk to assess

Employers must assess the risk of work-related stress as they would any other risk to health, and act on what they find.

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, regulation 3

The six areas HSE looks at

HSE’s Management Standards cover demands, control, support, relationships, role and change: the six areas of work that, if not managed, cause stress.

HSE Management Standards for work-related stress

Workers are consulted

On a construction project the principal contractor must consult and engage with workers on their health, safety and welfare.

CDM 2015, regulation 14

How to use it

Put it where people stop

The welfare unit, the drying room and the back of the toilet door, where someone can note a number without being seen to.

Brief it as a talk

The mental health toolbox talk covers the same ground, with a signed record that it was given.

Check the numbers when you reprint

Helpline numbers rarely change, but check them against the charities’ own sites each time the poster is reprinted.

The briefing behind the poster,
signed on the phone.

On the platform a RAMS is read on the operative’s own phone, in their own language, and signed against the revision. Toolbox talks are signed on the phone too, so the office can show who was briefed, on what, and when.
